Camping is Fun! Worksheet

Read this selection about camping. Think about the meanings of the words in bold type.

Put on a backpack and boots and go hiking and camping. After a day on the trail, build a campfire, cook dinner, and spend a night under the stars. Camping is an adventure and a great outdoor sport. There are many rewards for the camper, whether you are new at camping or have lots of experience.

There is a lot to do before you can go hiking and camping. You must plan and prepare for the trip. You need to know what to wear and what clothes to bring for changes in the weather. You must have all the information you need about the mountain or paths you will hike. It is important to plan the route, or path, before you start. And you need to know where you will set up camp. To plan your hike, you will need good maps. Important tools and supplies include a compass, a flashlight and batteries, a first-aid kit, and, of course, food and water. To carry all this and other things, you will need a backpack. There are many kinds of backpacks. Some are better for long trips, others for short trips. A good backpack is light to carry and made of waterproof material to keep everything inside dry.

Camping is a great experience. There is much to see and do in addition to enjoying the scenery, or nature, and the fresh air. In a group of campers, everyone has a chore. Putting up the tent, getting water from a stream or lake, building a fire (and making sure it’s out before going to bed), and cooking dinner are all part of the camping experience. And there are many interesting activities to enjoy. Discovering a cave or sitting around the campfire telling stories or singing songs are just some of the rewards of camping.

Watch the stars, smell the trees, and listen to a stream flowing over the rocks. It is peaceful and quiet in the meadow or mountain. The wilderness is a great place to learn, to play, and to enjoy the beauty of nature. Camping is fun!
