June 19 – Miss Liberty Arrives

On June 19, 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York City. This statue was a gift from the people of France. It was given to commemorate the birth of the United States and to symbolize the friendship between the two nations. This gift was in celebration of the l00th birthday of the Declaration of Independence.

Frederic August Bartholdi designed the statue which is a figure of a draped woman holding a torch high in her right hand. From the statue’s base to the torch, Miss Liberty is 301 feet, 1 inch tall. The base weighs more than 23,500 tons; the statue, an iron and steel framework covered by copper sheets, weighs approximately 225 tons.

The Statue of Liberty is just one of many famous buildings and monuments that can be found across America. What are some other famous buildings and monuments that people enjoy visiting?
