Art Lessons for Grades 4-8
HALF FACES
Lesson
Drawing skills can be developed by looking at and drawing photographs. The shadows are already established. It is easy to see the darks and lights.
Procedure
- Find a magazine face that is fairly large (at least 4 or 5 inches).
- Cut the face in half.
- Paste one half of the face onto a piece of white drawing paper.
- Use a regular pencil to lightly draw the missing half of the face.
- Use colored pencils to color your drawing.
- Use some of the techniques illustrated below to experiment with colored pencil techniques.

RENDERING SHOES
Lesson
This lesson will increase your drawing and observation skills. It will also give you the opportunity to draw an object from several points of view.
Procedure
- Fold a piece of white drawing paper into four sections.
- In each section you will draw a shoe from a different angle.
- Work lightly until you have the correct form.
- Try to fill each rectangle with the shoe drawing so that each section has an interesting composition.
- When you are satisfied with each light sketch, you may darken and vary the lines.
- You may add volume and depth to the drawings using some of the shading techniques that are illustrated below.
