Sample PDF Activity

Display a big tree in the classroom. Talk with your children about trees. Discuss the parts of the tree ( branches, trunk, leaves, etc.). Have children finish your statements such as: “The tree is taller than .” “The tree is bigger than.” and ” The tree weighs more than _.”

Take the children outside to view trees on the school ground. Have them describe the trees. How are they different? How are they the same? How big is the trunk of the tree? Ask children to estimate the circumference of the trunk. Have children cut their string the length that they have guessed. Check their guesses by wrapping the string around the tree.

Return to the classroom and graph the string by TOO SHORT, TOO LONG, and JUST RIGHT. This is a good time to discuss which one has more or less.
