Trent Hein

Trent Robert Hein is best known as co-author (with Evi Nemeth, Garth Snyder, and Scott Seebass) of UNIX System Administration Handbook, generally considered the bible of UNIX system administration. Trent was also one of the first 3 employees of BSDI.

Among other things UNIX, Trent is perhaps best known for working on the BSD UNIX port to the MIPS architecture. This was the first RISC processor to run true BSD UNIX. MIPS processor support first appeared in the BSD 4.3-Reno release, though MIPS Computer Systems was soon swallowed by SGI.

At BSDI, Trent worked on a variety of kernel components, including autoconfiguration, drivers, virtual memory, and (perhaps most historically important) AT&T-license-free replacements for the few remaining restricted kernel modules at the time such as tty_subr.c.
