Timmins, Ontario

Timmins, with a population of 43,686, is a city in northern Ontario, Canada. At 3,210 square kilometres, Timmins is Canada's largest city in land area.

The city was founded in 1912 after three gold mines were discovered in the area. Mining, of gold and other metals such as silver, zinc, copper, and nickel, is the dominant industry in the area. Forestry is also important to the local economy.

Timmins natives include well-known country singer Shania Twain (b. 1965), NHL hockey player Steve Sullivan, and the not-so-well-known-but-well-meaning Raymond Yee, Ph.D. (b. 1967), technology architect of the Interactive University Project at UC Berkeley.
