Thyroidectomy
A thyroidectomy is the surgical procedure of removing all or part of the thyroid gland. It is often performed when a person has thyroid cancer or some other condition of the thyroid gland. The thyroid produces several hormones, such as thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), and contains the parathyroid glands, which produce calcitonin.
When the thyroid is removed, oral synthetic thyroid hormones are usually prescribed to prevent the most serious manifestations of the resultant hypothyroidism.
