The Age

The Age is a broadsheet daily newspaper in Melbourne, Australia that was founded on October 17, 1854, and is published by The Age Company Ltd, a subsidiary of John Fairfax Holdings Limited, the group also responsible for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Canberra Times, and The Australian Financial Review.

Its only local rival is the Murdoch tabloid Herald-Sun.

The Age's editorial position is reasonably consistent with the modern social-democratic position - mostly pro free-trade and moderately liberal on social issues. For example, The Age regularly prints featured opinion pieces from The Guardian, a left-leaning British broadsheet.

The Age features the cartoons of Michael Leunig and Ron Tandberg.

The current editor is Michael Gawenda, with Malcolm Schmidtke editing The Sunday Age.
