Tariff of Abominations

The so-called Tariff of Abominations was passed in 1828 at the urging of John Calhoun. It imposed high tariffs on imported raw materials as well as finished goods, aiming to discourage importation of goods and materials. It was the highest tariff imposed in America up to that time.

Actually the Tariff of Abominations was passed to Calhoun's great dismay!
