Sound Blaster

Sound Blaster is a de facto standard for sound cards on the IBM PC system platform. The creator of Sound Blaster is the Singapore-based firm Creative Labs. In the beginning, the Sound Blaster was built entirely around the Yamaha OPL2 sound chip from Yamaha Corporation.

Evolution of Sound Blaster Soundcards

The first Sound Blaster and the sequel Sound Blaster Pro featured FM synthesis using the Yamaha YM3812 compatibility mode of the OPL2. In addition the OPL2 could also play back sampled sound.

Sound Blaster Live! was the first Sound Blaster sound card to feature wavetable synthesis.
