Slovak language
Slovak language (Slovenčina or Slovenský jazyk) is a West Slavic language spoken in Slovakia. It is closely related to Czech in written form, but differs both phonetically and grammatically. The Slovak grammar is simpler (i.e. above all more regular) than Czech grammar, since the present-day Slovak language standard has been codified only in the 19th century. Slovak uses a modified Latin alphabet.The spoken Slovak language consists of a large number of dialects that can be divided in 3 basic groups:
- Eastern Slovak dialects (in Spis, Saris, Zemplin and Abov)
- Central Slovak dialects (in Liptov, Orava, Turiec, Tekov, Hont, Novohrad, Gemer and the historic Zvolen county)
- Western Slovak dialects (in remaining Slovakia)
