Sherwood Forest

(This article is about Sherwood Forest in England. The name also belongs to a place in the state of Maryland: see Sherwood Forest, Maryland.)

Sherwood Forest is a country park surrounding the village of Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire, England. In several versions of the myth it was home to the hero and outlaw Robin Hood and his merry men-however it is unlikely that unlikely that outlaws would be able to survive harsh winters here. Sherwood forest is also the location of on of the United Kingdom's Center Parcs holiday villages.

There is a particular tree in Sherwood Forest named Major Oak which, according to local folklore, was the actual base of operations of Robin Hood. Major Oak is between 800 and 1000 years old, and since the Victorian era its massive limbs have been supported in part by an elabourate system of artificial scaffolding. In February of 1998 a local company took cuttings from Major Oak and began cultivating cloness of the famous tree with the intention of sending saplings to be planted in major cities around the world.
