Porto Velho
Porto Velho is the capital of the Brazilian state of Rondônia. Located at the border of Rondônia and the state of Amazonas, it is an important trade center of cassiterita, the mining of which represents the most important economic activity in the region, and a center of transport and communication. It is located on the eastern shore of the Madeira River, a tributary of the Amazon River.
Despite having being built by workers all around Brazil and other countries, the city preserves the cultural roots of the indigenous peoples and the local population traditions.
Its name means "old harbor" in Portuguese and was taken from the "Militaries' Old Harbor", the site of a military encampment which stayed there during the Paraguay War.
