Plaid

Plaid (cloth)

Plaid is cloth is made with alternating stripes and bands of color woven into or dyed onto the fabric. This makes blocks of color that repeat vertically and horizontally in a pattern of squares and lines. This is an American usage. In Scotland the word for this is tartan and the word plaid is normally used as follows.

Plaid (clothing)

A plaid is a large length of
cloth, usually tartan. It is basically a blanket. It may be laid on the ground as a tablecloth for a picnic. However it is also worn pleated and wrapped around the waist with the end cast over the shoulder in the ancient style of kilt. A belt is worn to support the mass of material gathered at the waist.


Plaid (band)

British electronic music duo, Andy Turner & Ed Handley. The pair take their name from the different interweaving threads of the cloth. They are former members of The Black Dog (also known as Atypic, Balil...).

Plaid have collaborated with female singers Nicolette and Bjork.
