Peter Tatchell

Peter Tatchell (born January 21, 1952) is a well known human rights activist in Britain, though he was born in Melbourne, Australia.

He came out as gay in 1969, and moved to London in 1971, where he became a leading member of the Gay Liberation Front. He has taken part in multiple campaigns against homophobia. On May 10, 1990, he was one of 30 founding members of OutRage, a gay rights group.

Tatchell also has an interest in human rights in general. In 1999, he and some other activists attempted to place Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe (who was visiting Britain) under citizen's arrest on charges of torture. When the police arrived, the activists themselves were arrested.
