Pennsylvania Station

New York City's Pennsylvania Station is a large train station located on 32nd Street and 8th Avenue in the Borough of Manhattan. Built by the Pennsylvania Railroad, it is now used by a number of passenger rail services including Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road, MTA New York City Transit and New Jersey Transit.

The above-ground structure of the station (the platforms are below street level) was demolished in 1964 and the present day Madison Square Garden was built in its place. The demolition of such a well-known landmark was widely deplored and it is often cited as a catalyst for the architectural preservation movement in the United States, and for laws restricting such demolition.

Several other stations, including the main commuter rail station in Newark, New Jersey, also bear the name; many were formerly stations on the Pennsylvania Railroad.
