Olivia Newton-John (born September 26, 1948) is a British-born singer of popular music. She was born in Cambridge, England, but her family moved to Australia when she was five. She went to University in Melbourne. Her nickname is Livvy.
Her maternal grandfather was Max Born, a German Nobel prize winning physicist. Her niece is singer and entertainer Tottie Goldsmith.
Newton-John's musical career lasts already 30 years and dates back to her early childhood. In 1971, she moved to the USA, where she became a leading singer in both popular and country music. She had five #1 hits, one for the song Physical, which stayed ten weeks at the charts, and received 4 Grammys.
She also starred in the highly successful 1978 film version of the musical Grease, alongside John Travolta. However, her subsequent films, like Xanadu and Two of a Kind, had little success.
Newton-John, who has a star at Hollywood Blvd in recognition of her outstanding career, was married to Matt Latanzi from 1984 to 1995. There is one child from this marriage, Chloe, born in 1986. Since 1996 she lives with Patrick McDermott, a cameraman. In 1992 she underwent breast-cancer surgery from which she recovered recently.
