It was opened in 1935 through the gifts of benefactor Andrew W. Mellon. A second building, designed by noted architect I.M. Pei, was added in 1978, and houses the gallery's collection of modern and contemporary art.

It holds a collection featuring European masters as well as a broad cross-section of American art. It also has a collection of modern art.
