National Defense Highway System

The National Defense Highway System was produced as an outcome of the National Defense Highway Act of 1954. It was championed by President Eisenhower, and was influenced by both his experiences as a young soldier crossing the country in 1919 and by his appreciation of the German autobahn network.

Today the National Defense Highway System contains over 41,000 miles of roads.
