Long Island Sound

Long Island Sound is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean. It lies between Long Island, New York and the coastlines of The Bronx, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The western outlet of the Sound is a narrow confluence with the East River, creating an area of complex tidal currentss known as "Hellgate". The Sound widens to the east.

Long Island Sound has historically had a rich fishery, but in recent years the western part of the sound is effectively "dead". The fishing and lobstering industries have encouraged efforts to identify the cause of the dead water and rectify the problem.

Within New York City, the sound is bridged by the Triborough, Whitestone, and Throg's Neck bridges. Further east, ferries provide service between Long Island and Connecticut, and underwater cables transmit electricity.
