Lime Street Station
Lime Street Station is the principal railway station in Liverpool, England.Lime Street Station was originally built in 1836, and was at the end of a long incline down from Edge Hill along which trains were hauled by stationary engine.
The station has 2 glass overall roofs, the largest of which at 70m span was the biggest in the world at the time of building in 1857.
There are 9 platforms in use in the mainline station, and one platform in the low level (underground) station serving the Merseyrail Wirral Line.
The concourse has a ticket office, travel centre, snack bars, 2 pubs, shops and kiosks.
Lifts and escalators give access to the low level platform which serves the Merseyrail Wirral Line. 2 trains per hour each to Chester and Ellesmere Port, 4 per hour each to West Kirby and New Brighton.
The main station is served by:
- Virgin Trains - hourly to London, less frequent to Birmingham/Reading.
- Central Trains - hourly to Manchester/Sheffield/Eastern England, hourly to Birmingham/East Anglia
- Arriva Trans Pennine - hourly to Manchester/Leeds/North East England
- First North Western - hourly to Manchester Airport, hourly to Warrington via Widnes, hourly to Warrington via Earlestown,hourly to Manchester via Earlestown, hourly to Preston/Blackpool/Morecambe, 2 per hour to Wigan.
