Legnica

Legnica is a city in south-western Poland , upon Kaczawa river, with 108,000 inhabitants (1995).

Situated in the Lower Silesian Voivodship (since 1999), previously capital of Legnica Voivodship (1975-1998).

Legnica is famous for a battle that took place near the city in the Middle Ages (1241) between Mongols of Golden Horde and the Poles under Henry II the Pious, duke of Poland, suppoerted by the feudal nobility including the Knights Templar. The battle is known as Battle of Legnica and it was a defeat for the nobility.
