Janko Bobetko
Janko Bobetko (1919-2003) was a Croat general and the chief of main staff of the Croatian army between 1992 and 1995. Under his command Croatian Army emerged victorious in many decisive battles prior to final crackdown on rebel Croatian Serbs in the operation "Storm". The chief Bobetko's military masterpieces included the battle for liberation of Dubrovnik hinterland, the Maslenica bridge operation and the Medak pocket attack in Lika 1994.The Croatian soldiers supposedly committed crimes against humanity and violations of the laws or customs of war in the so-called Operation "Medak pocket" in 1993. The ICTY subsequently indicted Bobetko as the supreme commanding officer in ICTY case no. IT-02-62. However-Bobetko indignantly refused to accept the ICTY indicement, backed by the vast (over 80%) majority of Croatian people. Protracted crisis and ambiguous position of Croatian government over his extradition contributed to the rapid physical deterioration of already gravely ill Bobetko.
Bobetko died in 2003 before being extradited.
