History of Trinidad and Tobago
Background:
The islands came under
British control in the 18th century; Following the dissolution of the West Indies Federation, independence was granted in
1962; with Eric Williams as Prime Minister. The country became a
republic within the
Commonwealth in
1976,with a president replacing the British monarch as head of state. The country is one of the most prosperous in the
Caribbean thanks largely to
petroleum and
natural gas production and processing.
Tourism, mostly in
Tobago, is targeted for expansion and is growing.
