Greenock

Greenock is a town in the district of Inverclyde, in western Scotland. Its population was recorded as being 45,467 in the 2001 Census. It lies on the south bank of the River Clyde.

The engineer James Watt and poet Denis Devlin were born in the town.

The history of the town's name is uncertain. The notion that it's named after a "Green Oak" is almost certainly unfounded. A dubious, yet at least plausible explanation is that the town's name is a distortion of the Gaelic "Grian Cnoc", or Sunny Hill.
