Francis Pegahmagabow

Corporal Francis Pegahmagabow (1891-1952) is one of the most highly decorated aboriginal soldiers in Canadian military history. He was an Ojibwa from the Parry Island Band in Ontario, Canada. He enlisted in August 1914 and was involved in the Battle of Ypres, when the Germans first used chlorine gas attacks. He was known as a very effective marksman, having killed upwards of 378 Germans.

In 1919, he returned to Canada and continued to serve as Algonquin Militia Regiment and became Chief of the Parry Island Band in 1921 until 1925. He was also a councillor from 1933 to 1936.
