Foxtail pine

A Foxtail pine

The Foxtail Pine (Pinus balfouriana) is a rare pine tree that only occurs in the Klamath Mountains and the Sierra Nevada of California, USA. Foxtail pines occur in the subalpine forest in these mountains: at an elevation of 6000-8000' in the Klamath range, and 9000-11000' in the Sierra Nevada. In the Sierra Nevada, Foxtail pines are limited to the area around Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

It is thought that Foxtail pines can live up to 3000 years in the Sierra Nevada, although the highest provable age is only 682 years.

The Foxtail pine can hybridize with the Bristlecone pine.
