ETH Zurich

ETH Zurich (German Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, ETHZ) is the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich in Switzerland. It began in 1855 as a polytechnic institute, and for 114 years it was the only federal institute of this kind in Switzerland. In 1969, a similar institute of technology in Lausanne received the same status.

As of 2001, there were 11927 students, 330 professors and 840 lecturers at the ETH Zurich. The institute has has produced 20 Nobel prize winners, 11 of them in the field of chemistry. Most recently, Kurt Wüthrich received the Prize in 2002 for his development of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for determining the three-dimensional structure of biological macromolecules in solution.

Unlike most other universities, ETH Zurich has no single campus; Hönggerberg and Zentrum are the main locations, but various buildings and institutions are spread all over Zurich, integrating it into the city.
