Daniel Chester French
Daniel Chester French (1850-1931) was an American sculptor, whose works include The Minute Man, Death Staying the Hand of the Sculptor, and the Lincoln Memorial. A friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson, he was introduced to the Transcendentalist movement, which had a major influence on his work. His decision to pursue sculpting was influenced by Louisa May Alcott.

In 1940, French was selected as one of five artists to be honored in a series of postage stamps dedicated to great Americans.
