Creative Labs

Creative Labs are a manufacturer of computer multimedia products based in Singapore where the firm was initially founded on June 1, 1981.

In 1987 Creative Labs engineered a 12 voice synthetic sound card for the IBM PC architecture. This was however not successful and lost the competition against AdLib using the Yamaha YM3812 chip. After this failure another attempt was made with Sound Blaster, a card featuring the Yamaha OPL2 chip from Yamaha Corporation, compatible with the YM3812 found on the AdLib card. This card soon became a de facto standard for sound cards in PCs.
