Chongqing
Chongqing City (重慶市 or 重庆市 in pinyin: chong2 qing4 shi4, literal meaning: "Double Celebration"; formerly called Chung King before pinyin) pop. 7,200,000, is the capital of the Chongqing Municipality, which has a provincial-level status in China. It is located somewhat southeast of the center of China, i.e. on the west side of the densely populated eastern half of China; see the map in the municipality article.
Chongqing was the provisional capital of the government of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek during World War II (Second Chinese-Japanese War). The capital had been moved in 1937 from Nanjing, as a consequence of the Battle of Nanjing and the fall of Nanjing to the Japanese troops.
Located on the upper reaches of the Yangtze, Chongqing is planned to be the beachhead for the development of the western part of the country. Massive public works are currently under way in the city.
