Cavity resonator

A cavity resonator uses resonance to amplify a wave, which bounces back and forth against the boundaries of the cavity, thus re-inforcing the wave in some locations, which reshapes the wave. See standing wave.

Some common examples of resonators include the klystron tube in a microwave oven (see also magnetron), the body of a violin, and a highway tunnel.

The first laser used a ruby crystal as a resonator.
