Bayer became part of IG Farben, a conglomerate of German chemical industries during the First World War. When the Allies disintegrated IG Farben due to several war crimes, the company reappeared as an individual business.

In 2002 Bayer AG aquired Aventis CropScience and formed Bayer CropScience. In additon to conventional agrochemical business it is involved in genetic engineering of food.
