Amritsar massacre
The Amritsar massacre, also known as the Jalianwalla Bagh massacre, an event which occurred on April 13 (the traditional Baisakhi Day), 1919, in the Jalianwalla Bagh (the name of a public park in Amritsar in Punjab) in which hundreds of peaceful protesters were gunned down on the orders of the British General O'Dwyer.The protesters were meeting in defiance of the prohibitory orders which banned a gathering of five or more people in a public place.
The event caused nationwide furore and led to an escalation in the demand of national freedom for India from British rule.
